Porto Rico Importing Co.

Veteran coffee vendor who is a specialist in international brews, loose teas, and a variety.

When you enter this traditional West Village shop, the smell of fresh roasting beans fills the air. The shelves are lined with jars and bags of dark brown beans, along with tea-making equipment, coffee accessories and sugar.

Porto Rico, originally opened in 1907 by Italian immigrants Patsy Albonese. Greenwich Village at the time was witnessing a surge of Italian immigrants, who had opened businesses to meet their food needs. Albanese named her shop after the famous Puerto Rican coffee she imported (and sold) which was that was so popular at the time that even the Pope was a fan.

Today, Porto Rico sells 130 varieties of beans from all over the globe at three locations in New York City including their Bleecker Street location, Essex Market and online. Porto Rico also roasts its own beans and provides wholesale distribution to 350 restaurants in NYC and Brooklyn.

Peter Longo, current owner and president, grew up in the family bakery on Bleecker Street, where his father ran Porto Rico. He continues to operate the shop in the same manner as his father and grandfather.

Sey Coffee

Sey Coffee, a coffee roaster and shop is located along Grattan Street, in Morgantown. The neighborhood, which is part of Brooklyn's Bushwick district is located on Grattan Street. Co-founders Tobin Polk and Lance Schnorenberg, both 33 began roasting in a fourth-floor loft just around the corner at their new location in 2011 under the name Lofted Coffee (with local clients including Greenpoint's Budin and Soho cart service Peddler).

Sey's preference for micro-lots or even whole harvests from a single farmer has been praised by highly discerning New York City most expensive coffee beans aficionados. Last year, they made a six-bag micro-lot purchase of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai 785 from Brazil's Espirito Santo region. The beans were carefully picked at peak ripeness and floated to remove defects and dried fermented for 36 hours before being dried on the farm. The result is a blend with hints of berry lemongrass, and melon.

Sey's commitment extends beyond its shop to improve the overall well-being of staff and farmers, and customers. It uses composts and biodegradable plastics to ensure that waste is kept out of landfills. This helps reduce greenhouse gases as well as nourish the soil. It also eliminates gratuity. This allows baristas to focus on their craft and help sustain their livelihoods.

La Cabra

La Cabra, a modern specialty-coffee company, was founded in Aarhus in Denmark in 2012. The company began with a small store and a dedicated staff. Their honest and innovative approach to providing a superior coffee experience has earned them a loyal following not only in their home town but all over the world.

La Carba has a rigorous method of identifying their ideal beans, scouring through hundreds of different varieties every year to locate the ones that meet their standards. They roast them light, adjusting the desired flavor profile. This gives the coffees a greater clarity and a more vibrant taste.

The East Village store, which was opened in October of last year, has been praised for its top-quality pour-overs as well as its baked goods, overseen by Jared Sexton. He previously worked at Bien Cuit, Dominique Ansel and other coffee houses.

The shop utilizes a La Marzocco modbar, and the plates and cups are custom-designed at Wurtz ceramics in Horsens, which is a father-son studio. In a recent Q&A session with Atlanta Coffee Shops, General Manager Ian Walla reveals that La Cabra serves around 250 different varieties of coffee each year, and typically has seven or eight varieties on offer at any given point.

The Plant Coffee Roasting Plant Coffee

The Roasting Plant is a multi-unit retailer of coffee roasts and brews the coffee on site. Each cup is brewed and roasted according to your specifications within less than seconds. It scour countries far and far to find the finest specialty beans, which are directly sourced that offer customers a variety and high-quality.

The roaster they have on site is a fluid bed device, which is different from traditional drum machines commonly found in UK coffee shops. The beans are blown about in a heated box by high-velocity air, which keeps the green beans suspended and allows roasting to happen at a consistent rate as they travel through the machine.

I tried the Sumatran Coffee and it was incredibly rich and velvety with a smooth taste. Dark chocolate was evident in the aroma and as you sipped the coffee you could detect subtle citrus fruit aromas.

The coffee that has been roasted is transported to the Eversys super-automatic brewing systems and brewed to your specification within less than a minute. Customers can select from nine single origin selections and a variety of blends.

Parlor Coffee

Parlor Coffee was founded in 2012 behind a barbershop, with a single group espresso machine. It has since morphed into a flourishing coffee roastery, whose coffee beans can be found in a variety of great cafes, restaurants, and home brewers throughout the city. Parlor is committed to sourcing top-quality beans from around the globe each of which has been through a long and difficult journey before arriving in the hands of its roasters.

The owners, who are self-described as "passionate about their craft and believe that good coffee should be accessible to all," have created a space that is grounded and has chalkboards, compost bins, recycled handmade items, and simple decor.

They roast their own blends (there were six when I was there) and single-origins. However, they also hold cuppings on Sundays, which are open to the public. Think of it as a brewery tasting room--you can smell and taste the ground beans, from chocolatey to earthy (one was almost tomato-like!). They're a bit away from the main roads, but is worth a visit.
