How to Replace an audi spare key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

happy-young-woman-with-key-sitting-in-new-car-2022-12-16-21-31-14-utc-min-scaled.jpgIf this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for Key For Audi evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i believe that i've ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. They're cheap and easy to find particularly if they're a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi replacement Key service near me, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slow the replacement car key audi's engine is spinning. If this sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission, as well as the other audi replacement car keys's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a common feature across the audi key programming 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
