How to Replace an audi remote key Smart key replacement (maps.google.Nr) G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Saab-logo.jpgIn this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are various pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or an unfire when in the gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good news is they are very affordable and readily available, especially if you're looking at a Bosch sensor, which is what we have. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for many problems in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi keyless go, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This is a common feature across the audi tt key fob not working 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find good ones in wrecking yards.
