Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves

Summary: These basic and light-weight stoves burn wood, hexamine tablets, white fuel and gas canisters via one nozzle. These stoves are popular in cold weather, but they can be noisy and lack simmer control.

Some multi-fuel stoves are hybrids that can burn different kinds of liquid fuel. The MSR WhisperLite Universal can be used with both white and isobutane canisters for fuel.

Optimus Nova

The Optimus Nova multi-fuel stove can be used to cook a variety of liquid fuels. It has a quick-priming burner, an aluminium pump that self-purges and precise control of the simmer. Its low center of gravity and large spreading legs make it a solid stove that can be used on rocky ground. This makes it a perfect stove for base camps for groups as well as kayaking and the Arctic camp.

The Optimus Nova is different from other stoves using liquid fuel that are plagued by unburned fuel lingering in the fuel line or nozzle. This can be resolved by simply flipping over the bottle. The intake hoses are removed from the fuel and forces them to take in air, which extinguishes flames and depressurizes bottles.

This seems like a fairly clever solution to a long-standing problem and it definitely does the trick. The Nova can be used with any fuel bottle that has an o-ring seal, which includes MSR bottles. It comes with stove bags that include pockets for tools, spares along with lubricant and fuel pump.

This is a fantastic stove for backpacking that is suitable for use in the UK. It is especially useful for expeditions, where many fuel types are required. The cost is quite affordable compared to other canister stoves with similar capabilities. Additionally, the Optimus Nova is easy to maintain and a pleasure to use.

Kovea Hydra

The Kovea Hydra multi fuel stove first came on the market in 2010 and has been a favourite choice for backpackers since. The Hydra is not as popular with UK backpackers anymore, perhaps because they have gained popularity with brands that are more well-known or the latest lightweight offering from China or Korea. However, that doesn't make it any less useful.

It is a compact and lightweight stove that burns all liquid fuels including propane butane, white gas, and white gas through only one nozzle. It's a typical stove, with a burner attached to a body which anchors three support legs that fold out. A pump sits on the top of the fuel line and the generator loop runs around the inlet, and the flame spreader is situated above the inlet. The burner is a low-velocity flame type. This means that it is not susceptible to wind.

It's a remarkably versatile little cooker since it can be used with either isobutane canisters or propane canisters. It is simple to simmer using isobutane and propane and it burns all fuels at a reasonable rate. However, when using white gas the stove can be a little slower.

One thing to be aware of with the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English which was not written by someone who speaks the language. The instructions caution against the use of certain types of lighter fluids that if used in a manner that is not what was intended, could lead to an accident that would land Kovea in a lot of hot legal water. Any 7/16ths UNEF-threaded gas container from a reputable brand will be fine.

Primus OmniLite Ti

Primus Omnilite Ti can be a great option for those looking for a multifuel cooker that can cook with a variety of fuels. It can be powered by gas, petrol/gasoline or Kerosene, diesel and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for each fuel type, and you can also adjust the flame size. This stove has an fuel pipe that sits flat on the floor and is connected to the tank quickly.

The Primus Omnilite is an excellent stove, but it requires maintenance to ensure it is operating properly. It could be dangerous as it flares up when you are priming. This issue occurs with all stoves that use liquid fuel that use a second spindle on the stove's side instead of an actual coil to vaporize the fuel.

It is also important to note that every fuel type requires an individual jet. This means that if cooking using kerosene, the jet hole must be smaller than when cooking on gas. It's not a major issue, but it's worth mentioning.

MSR Whisper Light

The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the lightest, smallest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also easy to repair in the field. It is able to be used with canister or liquid fuel and comes with attachments for both. The new design is 10% lighter than its predecessor, and the burner system has been redesigned to ensure better heat distribution. It's great for beginners or budget-minded backpackers.

The whistler Lite takes a little time to prepare and prime, then boil water, but it is an efficient stove that will not let you down. The flame is powerful when cranked all the way up and can boil the water to a liter in two minutes or less. The only issue is that it does not simmer like other stoves.

MSR developed the Dragonfly to be a more capable burner. It's designed in the same way like the whistler, but it is more compact and provides superior performance. It's not as affordable as the Whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus stove and cookset is a fantastic alternative that provides a similar configuration for a fraction of the cost. Whisperlite International and Universal can be utilized with isobutane. The same design is used in both but the Universal version can be operated with fuel from canisters in addition.

Coleman Sportster II

Like many Coleman stoves this is a basic, rough and ready unit that just gets the job done. It's solid and compact, and it's self-contained with the tank at the bottom and the burner up top. This makes it simple to use and a good option for backpackers, beginners who want to save on weight, and for those of us who like to keep an extra or two in the van.

The stove is designed to burn Coleman's proprietary fuel (naptha gas, also known as white gas) This stove can be used with unleaded gasoline too. This will save you money since gasoline tanks can last as long as the standard Coleman liquid fuel cylinder.

It requires some practice to create a solid blue flame on a liquid fuel stove. You'll have to pressurize the stove and prime them correctly before you can start. If you get it wrong, your fuel may spill out, splash beyond the burner, or even splash out. To master this, practice outside before you go on your excursion.

The stove may lose some performance and flame odor effectiveness if you use non-Coleman gasoline, but this is a tradeoff in its versatility. Be sure to buy gasoline that isn't leaded and not augmented with methanol or ethanol (alcohol). These kinds of fuels can cause the performance of the vehicle to decrease and even explode.

ATG Jiko

nrg-5kw-eco-design-stove-multifuel-cast-iron-fireplace-portable-defra-approved-325.jpgThe ATG Jiko best 5kw multi fuel stove-fuel stove made in South Africa (formerly known as the jiko) is an ultralight multifuel stove specifically built for harsh environments like Africa. It's a compact and solid stove that can burn solid fuel tabs, gels and alcohol with a single nozzle. It is a minimalist, ultralight design that is priced lower than other multifuel stoves. It also costs less per liter compared to gas canisters.

Other multifuel stoves feature a separate nozzle for each fuel type. This makes them a little fiddly to change over in cold weather or using gloves, and could increase their weight. The newer types of multifuel stoves have come up with ways to use the same nozzle to ignite various fuels, which makes it more convenient. The newer models of these stoves are known as 'hybrid', or 'compressed multifuel stoves'. there are various names for them, including isobutane canister fuel white gas, kerosene, and unleaded gasoline/car petrol.

A multifuel stove kit can be bought to transform your Trangia burners into multi fuel cookers. These are available at camping stores that specialize in outdoor equipment and can be bought internationally. They are a good option for Trangia fans and they're capable of burning all liquid fuels, with the exception of diesel, and when equipped with the right accessories can even cook.wood-burning-stove-with-back-boiler-fireplace-multi-fuel-prity-s3w17-17-5-kw-2181.jpg
